Chinese trading

China explores trading frontiers with India, Pakistan and Taiwan

In the hope of expanding international chinese trading frontiers, reportedly China has initiated a research study to find out the feasibility of a rail link to Pakistan through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). This research study has been allocated funds to gauge the feasibility if this rail link could connect the countries.
A transport link between Kashgar in Xinjiang, China and Gwadar Port in Pakistan could connect two of the toughest regions in the world. Zhang Chunlin, Regional Development and Reform Commission, Xinjiang said, as quoted by Times of India “The 1,800-km China-Pakistan railway is planned to also pass through Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad and Karachi.” He also said, “Although the cost of constructing the railway is expected to be high due to the hostile environment and complicated geographic conditions, the study of the project has already started.”

This step has come after signing of an agreement between China and Pakistan to open an economic route, connecting kashgar and Gwadar via improved road networks. This is also being viewed as an effort to revive ancient silk route, which was used as a international trading route. In the wake of improving international trading between the two countries, Pakistan has ceded the operations of Gwadar Port to China. However, the announcement of this project has come at a time when China is hosting India and Myanmar for the commemoration of Panchsheel, a document for peaceful co-existence. India has already made it very clear that this project is controversial, as the rail link will pass through POK. Pakistan and India have been walking thin ice for a many years over POK.

Pakistan is not the only country with which China is seeking to build economic ties. As the President of India is in China at the moment, China and India has also discussed the possibility of establishing industrial parks and are waiting on the finalization of terms of MOU. Indian Ambassador Ashok K Kantha said as quoted by The Indian Express, priority of the new government is to step up manufacturing and want Chinese to get involved as the country has a strong track record in this sector.

The two countries have also discussed the idea of addressing the issue of trade deficit between the two. For this, Presidents of the two countries have requested each other to identify Chinese trading products which could sell in Indian markets and also ensure that Indian products have better access to the Chinese markets.

In addition to Pakistan and India, China has already been exploring possibilities with Taiwan, as for the first time in a long history an envoy had been sent to Taiwan to discuss  the possibilities of opening consulates to ease investment and tourist activities.

On one hand is the controversial rail link and on the other are some territorial acquisitions in the South China Sea. For many these diplomatic ties building activities are being touted as an eye wash and even revival of Panchsheel is being labeled as an empty promise.
