Show Luo: Show Your Dance

After 364 (yes, official release dates.) days from his previous album, Speshow, which contains great dance tracks like Jing Wu Men (The Dancing Gate), Guo Wang You Xi (King’s Game – Featuring Simon Webbe from the now-defunct boy band, Blues), Twinkle (Featuring Japanese singer Kumi Koda), Luo Zhi Xiang has finally released an album under his contract with Capitol Records.

The album, entitled Show Your Dance, features Luo Zhi Xiang in his strength for dance songs, either accompanied with the original dance moves or not, and his shot at ballads.

Here are my song reviews:

Yi Zhi Du Xiu (One-Man Show): This song is very similar with the previous album’s Jing Wu Men. It has a dance feel to it, and it has a catchy chorus. The music video is extended with a “Native Dance”. This dance consist lots of stomping and shouting “Haa!”. It catches my attention, especially when Xiao Gui did a funny rendition of it.

Dang Wo Men Zai Yi Kuai (When We Are Together): This song has a very joyous feel to it. It’s a very happy song where you feel like releasing your inner-child and just jump around like someone mad. This is similar with the track from his previous album, Xing Fu Lie Ren.

Wo Bu Hui Chang Ge (I Won’t Sing): This song is very melancholic. It has a Jay Chou feel in it. It is rather similar with Jay Chou’s An Jing and Wang Lee Hom’s Kiss Goodbye. What attracts me most is the piano introduction. The meaning behind this song is very touching, especially if you can interpret it with your own personal experience. It can be compared with Luo Zhi Xiang,’s other touching song, Ai Zhuan Jiao.

Bai Gei Ni (Lost to You): This song features a duet with Elva Hsiao. It has a very playful feel to it. The MV is very cute! In the video, Luo Zhi Xiang and Elva Hsiao actually exhibited a very interesting dance. It can be compared with one of Luo Zhi Xiang’s greastest hits, Lian Ai Da Ren. The music is also similar like Chance Chance

Ai Qing San Bu Qu (Love’s No-Go): This song is also very catchy for the ear. It has a trance/techno/club influence. It can be compared with the previous album’s Guo Wang You Xi.

Zhuo De Dao (Do It Well): This has nothing to do with the hit single Do It Well by Jennifer Lopez. It is also a melancholic ballad. The rhythm of the song is simply addictive.

Hu Die Xiu (Butterfly): This song has a very interesting introduction. This song sounds like it belongs in the dancing game, AuditionSEA. It can be compared with Sui Sui Nian from his previous album.

Chao Pan Shou (DJ): This song is similar with Hu De Xiu. The chorus is interesting. This song is a good dance track, but it doesn’t really outwin his other dance tracks.

Fang Dao Suo (The Lock on Your Heart): This song is similar with JJ Lin Jun Jie’s Chi Bang. It is a great ballad. This isn’t as great as Zhuo De Dao though.

Zui Hou De Feng Du: This is one great ballad. It also has a Jay Chou feeling to it. This is definitely nicer than Fang Dao Suo.

Wo Xiu Gu Wo Zai (I Am Who I Dance): This has the most dance feeling overall. It also shows how, err, good Luo Zhi Xiang’s english is. This track is quite similar with one of his earliest songs, Ji Qi Wa Wa.

Recommended: Yi Zhi Du Xiu, Wo Xiu Gu Wo Zai, Zhuo De Dao, Bai Gei Ni

Online Branding and Click-Through Affiliations

Online branding consists of how you go about differentiating your company and your product from your competitors in the marketplace. The online part implies that you will use the World Wide Web as a key component in your branding strategy, regardless of whether your company’s primary business is online or whether your online presence is merely another dimension of your branding strategy. The goal of branding, simply put, is not to build customer awareness but to build customer loyalty.

The first thing you need to do in order to build your brand is identify your customers. What is the most likely demographic for you to draw your customers from? Once you know that, you will need to figure out your message. How will you make your online content both relevant and engaging?

It does no good to engage your customers without being relevant. No doubt everyone has seen commercials that succeeded as entertainment, yet five minutes after watching them, you couldn’t remember the product or the company. Being engaging is useless if you’re not relevant. In order to be relevant, you must know who your customers are likely to be, know your unique business style, personality, and the culture and tone of your company, and use this knowledge as the basis for building a connection between your company and your customer. In this way, you can provide your customers with an experience that rewards the time they spend on your site—and rewards you through the effect your content will have in terms of building customer awareness of, and eventually loyalty to, your brand.

Site visitors will want to know how you are going to add value to their professional and / or personal lives. In addition to the content your site provides to the visitor, you will most likely want to affiliate with other companies. You’ve seen it before—a website with a bunch of other company’s logos across the top or the bottom, often with a message admonishing you to be sure to check out these affiliated companies.

These click-throughs can be immensely useful in cementing your brand in people’s minds. By affiliating your company with other services, you create a customer bonding opportunity. The key to this, however, is relevance. If, for example, your company makes taillights for motorcycles, it would be perfectly sensible to link to the site of a company selling motorcycle safety products. It would be an utter non sequitur to link to a site that sells wedding favors, regardless of the company’s popularity. Your goal in forging these alliances is to enhance your brand; whatever you provide in terms of links must complement your brand’s strengths.

Bearing in mind that the key attributes of successful online content are that it is engaging and relevant; bear this in mind when you choose to affiliate with other companies via click-through links to their websites. Remember, your website should not just be engaging, but relevant through and through. This applies to all the content of your website, including affiliated companies you supply click-through links toward.

How to improve your site search

Making sure that your search engine makes it as easy as possible for your customers to find what they are looking for is business-critical. It is also very difficult – good search engines can cost an awful lot of money and require a lot of ongoing effort to keep them up to scratch.

As an example: on Monday 12th December 2005, I wanted to buy a copy of Jamie Oliver’s new cook book Jamie’s Italy from So, I went to the “Books” section of their website and searched for “olivers italy” and these 9 items appeared on the results page:

2. “A Garden in Lucca: Finding Paradise in Tuscany” by Paul Gervais
3. “History in Exile: Memory and Identity at the Borders of the Balkans” by Pamela Ballinger
4. “Oliver Tractors” by Jeff Hackett, Mike Schaefer
5. “Wyoming (Moon Handbooks S.)” by Don Pitcher
6. “Wines of Australia (Mitchell Beazley Wine Guides)” by James Halliday
7. “All Music Guide to Jazz: The Definitive Guide to Jazz Music” by Ron Wynn (Editor), et al.
8. “Larousse Gastronomique: The World’s Greatest Cookery Encyclopedia” by Prosper Montagne
9. “The Teacher’s Calendar: The Day-By-Day Directory to Holidays, Historical Events, Birthdays and Special Days, Weeks and Months” by Holly McGuire (Compiler), et al.

Jamie Oliver’s book didn’t appear anywhere on the results page, even though it had been Amazon’s 3rd best-selling book in the previous 24 hours.

The problem was that I had typed “olivers italy”, instead of “oliver’s italy” (which would have returned Jamie Oliver’s at the top of the search results list). That single missing apostrophe was all that it took for Amazon’s expensive search engine to splutter, fall over and fail.

So – if Amazon can’t do it, it must be impossible, right?

Wrong – here are some things the boys & girls at Amazon could – and should – have thought about.

Two types of problems

There are two basic types of problems that a user can experience when they are searching for something:

– User-error – the correct search term is entered incorrectly (i.e. the user intends to enter a search term that would cause the search engine to return results that are relevant to their needs, but they enter it incorrectly).

– Search engine error – the wrong search term is entered (i.e. the user enters a search term that the search engine does not relate to their needs).

User error

People generally enter the correct search term incorrectly because they either:

– Don’t know how to spell it.
– Have made a typing error

It’s important to realise that there are millions of potential customers who can’t spell very well. For example, a 2003 survey of the literacy (i.e. reading and writing) estimated that there were 16% of English adults (aged 16 to 65-year-olds) had literacy levels no higher than those expected of an 11 year-old (source: The Skills for Life Survey).

Also, let’s not forget that according to the British Dyslexia Association around 4% of the population are severely dyslexic and a further 6% have mild to moderate dyslexia problems.

This means that your search engine has to account for people making basic knowledge-based spelling mistakes.

Your search engine should also account for people who know how to spell what they are looking for, but make typing errors. The main categories of typing error are:

– Characters close to one another on the keyboard being entered erroneously (either in place of – or in addition to – the correct letter). For example: wrong/wring ; for/dfor.
– Characters being omitted. For example: missing/missng ; oliver’s/olivers.
– Characters being entered too many times. For example: impossible/imposssible.
– Characters being entered in the wrong order. For example: disaply/display ; being/ebing.

Your search engine should allow people to make these mistakes and still return useful and relevant results.

Even though we have named these types of issues ‘User error’, if your search engine fails to return information that that the user is looking for it is, of course, your fault and not theirs!

Search engine error

When people enter the wrong term into a search engine, it is only wrong because you have not anticipated it. You should aim to cover as many bases and anticipate as many different search terms as possible.

What to do

The next steps for making your search engine perform better are really simple:

– Sit down and make a list of all the spelling errors, typing errors and alternative search terms that you think could possibly be relevant to your site (e.g. actually look at your keyboard and think about what letters are close to one another).
– Ask other people in your organisation to make similar lists.
– Do some research into what search terms people are using on your site (e.g. interviews, questionnaires, check your search engine logs, etc.)
– Apply everything you learn to your search engine.

And that’s it. You now have the knowledge you need to begin improving your site’s search engine.

Other thoughts

– Improvements in word processing software have made people lazy typists. Software that auto-corrects many spelling and typing errors means that people are no longer forced to review and correct their work to the same extent as in the past. This means that many people are getting out of the habit of precise spelling/typing. So, when they move out of an auto-correcting environment (and onto a website, for example) they are more likely to make – and less likely to notice/correct – mistakes!

– Search results pages should display the search term the user entered in large text (e.g. 28pt). This would help people spot any inadvertent errors.Results pages should also provide the telephone numbers for customer enquiries/assistance.
